Chimes : Westminster and Whittington

Westminster Chimes

The world’s most famous chimes are the Westminster.  Nearly everyone associates the Westminster chimes with the Clock Tower (also known as the ‘Big Ben Tower’ ) at the House of Parliament in London. Originally, however, they were fitted to the clock of the University Church, St Mary’s the Great, in Cambridge, England.  The words to this beautiful chime come from one of G. F. Handel’s famous musical compositions, “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth” and could be our daily prayer:

“Lord through this hour,
Be Thou our guide
So, by Thy power
No foot shall slide.”

Whittington Chimes

The famous Whittington chime is derived from the Church of St. Mary’s le Bow, in Cheapside, London.  The legend is that Dick Whittington, running away from ill treatment as a house waif, seemed to hear the chimes say, “Turn again- Whittington, Lord Mayor of London Town.”  Dick turned back to eventually serve three terms as London’s Lord Mayor of London Town.

Adina was founded in 1971 by Australian watchmaker and current managing director Robert ‘Bob’ Menzies. A determined businessman, Bob had a dream to create a watch capable of withstanding the rigours of the Australian lifestyle.

After months travelling the world sourcing premium components and advanced technology, Bob returned home to begin assembling his first watch collection. In a small storeroom in his family home, he designed and crafted each watch by hand, painstakingly ensuring the quality through an ever-fixed eyeglass.

This attention to detail and culture of hard work remains at the core of Adina’s business today. Adina now remains the only company to design and assemble its complete watch collection in Australia.

Today the business has grown from one dedicated man to a staff of twenty, including Bob’s son Grant, building the craft of quality Australian watchmaking through the generations. Each year Adina produces over 40,000 artisan watches from its Brisbane factory, available in over 300 retail outlets across the country.
